On April 26, 2018 7-9 explosions occurred at the Husky Energy Oil Refinery in Superior, Wisconsin The initial fire, caused by the explosion of a small tank containing either crude oil or asphalt around 10 am was out by 11:20 a.m and later reignited, causing the other explosions. Total amount of pollution has not been calculated. 20 were injured and thousands were evacuated due to a large smoke plume.
The Superior refinery processes light and heavy crude oil from the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota and western Canada into fuel products and asphalt.
